Why these 20
U.S. Census Bureau Business Formation Statistics, high-propensity series: EIN applications that the Census Bureau's model rates as likely to become businesses with payroll (for example a corporation, a hiring date on the form, or an industry such as manufacturing or restaurants). It's the closest open weekly measure of real startups; the all-applications list also counts sole traders and side businesses that never hire. Not every application becomes an employer, and big states lead on size alone.
