U.S. Census Bureau Business Formation Statistics: every application for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) that signals a new business, counted by the week it was filed. Each row also shows the 'likely employers' (high-propensity applications: the ones most likely to hire staff, the closest open measure of startups) and the change against the same week a year earlier. Not every application becomes an operating business.
